rear swing arm xvs failure

dont know how this happened do not remember curbing it but looking at the rust been gone a while with no effect on handling only noticed when the pinion bearing failed all you lads with an xvs worth checking

Hi mate, thanks for the PM. Checked both the XVS's & both are fine with no signs of any stress fractures. As you say in the post, the rust around the weld would suggest a long term problem, perhaps a poor factory weld to begin with, certainly not unheard of. Looks like you're going to be busy for a while! Take it easy. Bob :thumbsup:
Some mornings it's just not worth chewing through the restraints! :eek:

The swingarm was designed to support a single wheel and the weight of the bike. There would be little in the way of a twisting moment.

By adding all of the iron-mongery plus the weight of 2 wheels have you inadvertently exceeded the working limit of the swing arm?

yes is the answer but there are many that have been triked and not heard of any that have failed just bad luck and bad roads did my repair and decided to reinforce with 75mm tube well pleased with the work only problem when refited prop uj fouls so a new swing arm on order hey ho we live and learn

Yeah, added loads of strengthening supports to both swingarms in the construction/refurb stages of ours. Absolutely no chance of any stresses being transferred to the bearing pivots or surrounding areas. Good luck with the rebuild mate & at least it didn't happen when you were out & about.
