Wildstar Steering Damper

Post by Tiddles »

Recently got a Yamaha XV 1600 Wildstar/Roadstar based trike.

It has a wobbly issue especially at low speeds, around 30mph. Yes I know about Rake and Trail and I may look at thins in the future as its not a simple home job.

I have tried the universal dampers but there is no place to fit them. I an guessing a bracket would need welding to the frame.

But I am hoping there is a simple bolt on option.

A clamp around the frame?

Hi mate, i fitted a steering damper to my XVS1100 cos of a small wobble at low speeds. I attached one end to the bottom of the lower yoke & the other end to the crash bar top mount, however, i did have to make a bracket & a couple of spacers to get everything to line up/operate smoothly. Not sure what mounts you have but it should definitely be possible without welding. I also fitted an Avon Cobra Trike front tyre. Both these things eliminated my wobble. Took a bit of fiddling with the damper settings & a few test runs, but worth the aggro for the result. I got the damper from ebay, a 6 way adjustable one & you will have to check the length you need as they come in varying sizes. Hope this helps! Good luck & let us know how you get on. Bob.
Some mornings it's just not worth chewing through the restraints!

I have found a local bike mechanic with trike experience. He has said he will look for a suitable damper and can get brackets made.

I have considered the Avon Cobra Trike tyre but do not know how much of a difference it would make?

Do you have photos of you set up?

believe me the cobra trike tire makes a vast difference as the construction is vastly different aimed at ath different stresses and allow lower tire pressures the difference to mine was instant and noticeable and with finding the right tyre pressure dramatic i had already fitted a steering damper which helped but the tyre made the biggest good luck

Hi, as barry says, the tyre makes a huge & noticeable difference along with the damper. There are pics of my setup on here somewhere but i can't remember what thread it's under. Good luck, Bob.
