Registering a converted bike to a trike
Hi, I’m converting a motorbike into a trike for disability reasons and I’m a bit clueless to the legalities of this to get it road legal. It’s a custom built bolt on back end with no mods to original frame. Any help would be very grateful Thanks Andy

There is a tread on here somewhere explaining how to do it

Hello,
As far as I know, it is straight forward.
You need to change the V5c details from 2 wheels to 3 wheels which will probably mean a visit / inspection with the DVLA at a local office or they may come to you.
You will also need to change the taxation class to disabled on the V5c as well but not sure what else that entails or evidence you will need to provide to get it changed.
I have always found giving the DVLA a call or email works wonders but it usually takes a while to get through to them

my bolt on conversion needed no inspection other than an mot and getting weighed at weighbridge and filling out the forms
and stating all parts were purchased from autojumbles with no receipts

Hi Andy, good luck with your new trike mate, hope you have many happy trips with it.
As to registering it with DVLA, i've done this on three separate trike builds, all bolt on swingarm conversions, & have first hand knowledge of all the paperwork involved! To start you will need to change the details on the bikes V5, Wheelplan being the main one & then get form V627/1 Built up vehicle inspection report, Downloadable from DVLA website. Quite easy to fill in. Next, get the trike weighed & get a certificate to prove. Then you will need an MOT. Next, you must take photos of the trike, front, back, & both sides. Also one of the VIN number on the frame (very important), when you have all this, any supporting receipts for major parts are really helpful, but don't worry if you haven't any just state this on the form. Gather everything together & send to DVLA at the address on the form. You must also include a cheque for 6 months road tax. Takes about 6 weeks for them to sort everything out but they get there in the end!
Seems complicated but stick with it! I didn't have any issues with any of mine, got easier the more i did it. (ooh matron!)
Hope this helps mate. Bob

A person cannot change the wheel plan nor the taxation class. They can send documentary evidence to DVLA of the work they have done and request the change using the appropriate form.Trikertribe wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 10:09 pm Hello,

If accepted DVLA will issue a new V5 with the change.
Get everything right with the bolt on conversion and there is no follow up nor inspection by DVLA.
