Reliant Ignition

Post by Jody »

Just bought a 2nd trike. It's a Robin. The wife asked me what did I want for my birthday. So I said "an electronic ignition". I have seen one on ebay, and I contacted the seller. He asks if my coil is a ballast or non ballast. Can anyone tell me how I can find out which. The trike is Q reg so I have no idea of the year. Thanks

Be on the safe side & get 3 ohms coil which is required for electronic ignitions rather than take the chance on the one you got, also make sure you connect the wires correctly onto the coil, if you get it wrong it will fry your electronic ignition Red to pos Black to neg.
The older i get the earlier it seems to get late.

Turn ign. on and check voltage at coil - if it's around 9 - 10v it's ballasted, if 12v+ then it's non ballasted!

Check the coil voltage as above - if you've got around 9 volts then there's a resistor somewhere in the wiring. 12 volt coils won't work well on a 9 volt supply so to use one you'll have to remove/bypass the resistor. You might find starting is harder with a 12 volt coil and no ballast resistor too.

Just fired the trike up and connected the multi meter, it's showing 2.4. Do I connect the multi meter earth to the minus on the coil or trike body?

It's OK sorted. It's a non ballast type. Thanks for the help.
